Am I a Good Guest for Your Podcast?

Jim In Studio

Dear Fellow Podcaster,

I am a massive dog lover and I suspect I have a message that could resonate with your listeners.

I have been interviewed on CNN, appeared on The Tonight Show, and have been written about in national newspapers such as The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times. I have been a guest on hundreds of television shows, local and nationally syndicated radio programs and podcasts. In addition, I have been on the other side of the microphone as a host and producer for news/talk radio stations. I have been in this field for a while. (When I was just 15, I hosted a weekly teen call-in talk show in Washington, DC.)

But the question is: Am I a good guest for your podcast?

Only you know the answer.

As a fellow podcaster (I started podcasting in 2005 and after a long hiatus, am in the process of launching two new shows) I thought I would tell you what I would want to hear if I were considering a guest.

POTENTIAL GUEST CHECK LIST

Do you have good stories and topics that would be of interest to my audience?

Yes! The three topics that I would suggest are:

  1. How to Meditate with Your Dog – I literally wrote the book on the subject. It was published in 2005 and went on to become a best-seller. Dogs are natural meditation partners and can help inspire and teach us so much about the practice of meditation. This book has been responsible for getting hundreds of thousands of people to sit and meditate with their canine companions. I will discuss how and why to do it so your listeners can leverage the relationship they have with their dogs into a powerful meditation practice. As admittedly strange as this sound, it works. I have shown TV anchors how to do it live on the air and I can show you and your listeners as well.
  2. Dog Cancer is the #1 Killer of Dogs—But a dog cancer diagnosis does not have to be a death sentence. For the past 13 years, I have spent most of my professional career working both directly and indirectly in the field of canine cancer. My media company published the best-selling animal health book written by two renowned veterinarians The Dog Cancer Survival Guide. Along with one of the vets, I co-founded a nutraceutical company that makes leading edge dog supplements to help ensure the quality of life of dogs. I have personally dealt with the emotional roller coaster of cancer when my dog was diagnosed with it. I can help your listeners understand the options and provide the context if they currently are or ever find themselves facing a canine cancer diagnosis. The odds are they might since 1 in 3 dogs gets cancer. In some breeds, 75% die of cancer. While I am not a veterinarian, I have been working with vets and oncologists for well over a decade and can help share the news that dog cancer is a big problem, but there is real hope.
  3. Dog Lovers vs Dog Owners- Why (Most of Us) Aren’t Crazy – From millennials to senior citizens, a growing number of people view dogs as legitimate members of the family—sometimes as children. During our interview, I will walk you and your listeners through a fun, easy and brief quiz to determine whether you (they) are dog lovers or dog owners. There is a difference and it reveals a lot about your personality and outlook. Also, we can address the concerns that many dog lovers feel but are reluctant to discuss. This is can be a fun, light-hearted segment that your listeners will remember and tell their friends about.

How is your audio quality since we do remote interviews on our podcast?

As a fellow podcaster, I hear your concern. While I am based in Maui, Hawaii, I have a solid audio set up for remote interviews including:

  • Shure SM7B microphone
  • Rode Podcaster Pro
  • Sony professional headphones
  • High Speed Internet
  • Logitech 4K webcam
  • Quiet sound insulated office (though it wouldn’t be unheard of for one my dogs to make their presence known)

Do you have a social media platform to promote your appearance on my podcast?

Yes—I have a number of social media channels. I also run two companies that have social media operations where such a message may be appropriate. Depending upon several factors, we may promote my appearance on your podcast, but I can’t promise anything so please don’t let that be the deciding factor in your decision to invite me.
